77% of small businesses will no longer receive security updates for their Office package with immediate effect
New SME study by Intra2net reveals massive migration pressure
Tübingen, 14 October 2025 – Today marks the end of support for Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019. This means that 77% of small businesses in Germany will no longer receive security updates for their Office package – because migration to current versions is still proceeding slowly. This is one of the key findings of this year's SME study by Intra2net (www.intra2net.com). The groupware and security provider evaluated data from over 1,500 PC workstations in small businesses and compared it with figures from previous studies.
Office 2016 and 2019 continue to dominate on-premises
With an installation rate of 65%, Office 2016 and 2019 remain the most widely used versions in small businesses – and are now under immediate pressure to migrate. It is striking that the market share of Office 2016 in particular has remained stable over the last twelve months. A further 12% of SMEs still rely on Office 2010 or 2013, which have not received manufacturer support for years.
Switch to Office 2024 is slowly getting underway
The latest figures also show that when companies switch, they move directly to Office 2024. The latest on-premises package currently has a market share of 8% among small businesses, with Office 2019 users in particular making the switch. The 2021 version, on the other hand, plays virtually no role in new migrations.
‘The results are alarming, but not surprising. Many small businesses have not taken advantage of the last twelve months to update their Office package in time,’ says Steffen Jarosch, CEO of Intra2net AG. ‘Together with the end of support for Windows 10, there is now a massive backlog – especially since Microsoft does not offer a paid transitional solution for Office in the form of extended security updates.’
This year's SME study by Intra2net is based on a survey conducted in September 2025 among 104 German companies with 10 to 49 employees and 1,567 PC workstations running Microsoft Office.
Only companies without Hosted Exchange or Microsoft Office 365 were taken into account.
